The "reception work" (a concept that fits the purpose of the work under bidding) is a crucial stage in the trajectory of a Compagnon du Devoir. It is a masterpiece, a large-scale project that the applicant must complete to demonstrate his know-how, his creativity and his commitment to his craft.
The history of the "Compagnon du Devoir" or "Companion of Duty" dates back to the Middle Ages. It is a traditional system of apprenticeship and transmission of knowledge between craftsmen. The companions, often itinerant, grouped together in associations and shared their knowledge and experience. The companions were skilled craftsmen who traveled from town to town to perfect their training and acquire new skills. They were often housed and fed by other companions, and benefited from a network of solidarity and mutual aid. Over time, the "Compagnon du Devoir" became structured and organized. Associations of companions were formed, with their own rules and customs. The companions were grouped into different "obediences", corresponding to different trades and traditions. It is a true work that bears witness to the evolution of the aspirant throughout his apprenticeship. It must reflect his passion for his craft, his capacity for innovation and his mastery of traditional techniques. The candidate designs his project, draws up the plans and applies the techniques necessary for its realization. He is supported by more experienced colleagues who advise and guide him. Once his work is completed, the candidate presents it to a jury composed of peers and professionals. The jury evaluates the technical quality of the work, its originality and the applicant's ability to explain his work.
