BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian school following models of DELLA PORTA AND MIGUEL ANGEL; c. 1600.
"Christ crucified".
Silver and ebonized wood.
Measurements: 14,5 x 14,5 cm; 77 x 27 cm (cross).
This crucified Christ, made around 1600, corresponds to the Italian school and follows the models spread by Giacomo della Porta and, ultimately, by Michelangelo, whose formal solutions had a decisive influence on the iconography of the crucified in the transition from Renaissance to Baroque.
The work combines embossed silver in the figure of Christ with an ebonized wooden cross, creating a marked contrast between the metallic gleam of the body and the solemn darkness of the support. The Christ appears with a powerful and tense anatomy, of clear Michelangelesque inspiration: the torso is represented with a vigorous modeling, the muscles defined and the body in slight torsion, accentuating the drama of the scene.
The cross rises on a solid architectural pedestal, also made of ebonized wood, decorated with richly ornamented silver applications. In the center, a silver narrative relief represents a sacred scene -probably alluding to the Passion- that reinforces the devotional character of the piece. The decorative elements of scrolls and punched vegetal motifs give dynamism to the base and place the work within the late mannerist taste.
This type of crucifix, conceived for altars or private chapels, reflects the fusion between classical solemnity and baroque pathos typical of Italian sculpture at the end of the Cinquecento. Michelangelo's influence is evident in the monumentality of the nude and in the restrained expressiveness, while the hand of Italian goldsmiths can be seen in the exquisite silver execution, a symbol of luxury and sacredness.
