DESCRIPTION
HENRY FUGÈRE (France, 1872-1944).
"Oriental dancer", c. 1925.
Patinated bronze and Portoro marble base.
Signed.
Measurements: 49 x 12 x 10 cm.
Sculpture cast in bronze to the lost wax, representing a dancer dressed in a tight costume of exotic appearance, stylized figure and elegant and unstable position, following the models of the Art Deco style.
Henri Fugère was a French sculptor and medal engraver. Fugère studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Jules Cavalier, Louis-Ernest Barrias and Denys Puech. Fugère favored mainly the Art Deco style and initially specialized in playful bronzes of idealized beauties, as in his figure of Salome. Other works show realistic representations of soldiers or workers. For his chryselephantine works he used materials such as bronze, ivory and stone. He also worked as an engraver of medals. From 1893 he exhibited regularly in the salons of the Société des Artistes Français, of which he was eventually elected vice-president. In 1927 he received a mention honourable.
