Sculpture representing Christ crucified, one of the most recurrent and transcendent iconographies of the Christian tradition. It is a work attributed to the Brazilian school of the XVIII century, made in carved wood, with ebony cross and silver details. The figure of Christ is presented with a carefully modeled anatomy, elegant proportions and restrained expressiveness, which conveys the drama of sacrifice without falling into excessive violence or theatrical pathos characteristic of other sculptural traditions. The body, of controlled tension, arches slightly to the right, while the head, inclined, reflects serenity and resignation rather than extreme pain.
The surface treatment shows a remarkable technical sensitivity: the wood has been polished to a smooth texture and a sheen that highlights the warm tone of the material, while the gilded and finely stewed cloths introduce a visual contrast of great refinement. The sober, straight-lined cross, made of ebony with silver finials, underlines the nobility of the whole and frames the central figure with an almost architectural balance.
From the stylistic point of view, the work responds to the late Luso-Brazilian baroque, characterized by the synthesis between Iberian naturalism and colonial decorative sensibility. In contrast to the exalted dramatism of the Castilian or Andalusian schools, the Brazilian Christ of the 18th century is distinguished by a more devout and meditative tone, in which interior emotion prevails over gesturality. This aesthetic orientation, in dialogue with the Portuguese tradition, reveals the influence of the workshops of the religious orders established in Brazil, where sacred imagery reached a high degree of technical and spiritual quality.
