BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Amulet of Toth-Ibis; Egypt, Ptolemaic period, 664-30 BC.
Fayenza.
Measurements: 3 x 4 x 1 cm.
Amulet of Thoth as Ibis with Maat, symbol of truth, justice and cosmic harmony; she was also represented as a goddess, the daughter of Ra in Egyptian mythology, Thoth is considered the god of wisdom and had authority over all the gods. He was also the inventor of writing, patron of scribes, arts and sciences. ... He was a lunar god and time-measurer, and the one who established the first calendar and that is why the first month was named after him.

Amulets played a fundamental role in the Ptolemaic period (332-30 B.C.), when the Egyptian religious tradition remained extraordinarily alive despite the presence of a ruling elite of Macedonian origin. In this context of syncretism, amulets continued to act as protective objects with inherent magical efficacy, linked to the sacred word, the symbolic image and the material used. Their function was to ensure health, fertility, daily protection and the safeguarding of the body and the akh in the Hereafter. Classical motifs persisted, such as the eye-udjat, the djed pillar or the amulets of deities, but hybrid variants combining Egyptian and Hellenistic iconographies multiplied, evidencing the adaptation of traditional beliefs to the new cultural framework.
