DESCRIPTION
Processional cross. Spain, second third of the sixteenth century.
Wrought iron and polychrome.

Wooden pedestal, with some chipping.
Measurements: 55 x 36 x 8 cm (cross); 7 x 21 x 14 cm (pedestal).
This processional cross already belongs to the Renaissance period, although it preserves formal elements inherited from the Gothic language, characteristic of the stylistic transition in goldsmithery and religious forging.
Executed in wrought iron, it presents an orderly and symmetrical composition, in accordance with Renaissance principles, although the cut profiles, fretwork and pointed tops of the arms still refer to late Gothic solutions. The ends are enlivened with scrolls and Punctures that lighten the metal mass and provide a sober and balanced decorative rhythm.
An enameled medallion with the Virgin and Child (and Saint Dominic on the back) stands out at the crossing of the arms. The integration of the enamel is evidence of the continuity of mixed techniques in 16th century liturgical art.
As a whole, the cross clearly illustrates the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance, combining tradition and formal renovation, and reflects the high level of the workshops specialized in religious forging during the second half of the 16th century.
