These two allegorical sculptures, The Comedy and The Music, are fully inscribed in the production of Carl Kauba (Vienna, 1865-1922), one of the main representatives of the Viennese bronze of the beginning of the 20th century. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and later in Paris, Kauba developed a sculptural language characterized by meticulous realism, attention to detail and refined finishes.
Although he is especially known for his scenes of the Far West, in these works Kauba transfers that same technical virtuosity to allegory, endowing both figures with an elegant and expressive presence. The combined use of patinated bronze, gilt and silver, along with the agate base, reinforces their decorative and sumptuous character.
Carl Kauba trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and furthered his studies in Paris in 1886. His sculptures, of great realism, detailed polychrome finish and high technical quality, are representative of early 20th century Viennese bronze, largely produced for the American market between 1895 and 1912.
