DESCRIPTION
Andalusian School; XVII century.
"Child Jesus".
Carved and polychrome wood.
Presents faults, losses in the polychrome, restoration on the left arm and Repainting.
Measurements: 64 x 24 x 17 cm.
Devotional sculpture of round bulk belonging to the Andalusian school of the seventeenth century, an exponent of Baroque naturalism applied to the sacred child imagery. The figure represents the naked Baby Jesus, of proportionate canon and careful anatomy, with soft belly and fleshy extremities, resolved with great sculptural mastery. The face, of serene and concentrated expression, shows rosy cheeks, half-open mouth and introspective look, typical features of the Andalusian baroque.
Carved in wood and richly polychromed, the treatment of the flesh reveals a refined technique, with glazes that give verisimilitude to the skin. The Child carries the cross, an anticipated symbol of the Passion and presents a nimbus of bursts, underlining his divine nature and his redemptive role.
These sculptures of the Infant Jesus enjoyed great diffusion in Andalusia in the 17th century, both in conventual environments and in domestic devotion, being appreciated for their ability to combine tenderness, spirituality and high artistic level.
