DESCRIPTION
Circle of VASCO DE LA ZARZA (15th century - Avila, 1524).
Spanish school, ca.1525.
"Orante".
Marble.
Measurements: 75 x 27 x 18 cm.
This sculpture is inscribed in the full Castilian Renaissance, within the circle of Vasco de la Zarza, one of the key figures of the Spanish sculpture of the time.
The composition stands out for its expressive sobriety and formal balance, characteristic features of Vasco de la Zarza's workshop. The treatment of the wide and heavy draperies generates well-structured volumes that refer to the assimilation of Italian quattrocento models reinterpreted from a more austere Castilian sensibility.
The face, of restrained expression, transmits an interiorized spirituality, in accordance with the humanist religiosity of the first Spanish Renaissance. The slight twisting of the body and the displacement of the weight give a sense of contained life, distancing the figure from the Gothic rigidity still present in previous decades.
This type of sculpture was intended for funerary or devotional contexts, probably linked to private chapels or monasteries, and reflects the high technical and conceptual level reached by the workshops active in Castile around 1525.
The ascription to the circle of Vasco de la Zarza places the piece in an artistic environment of the first order, related to the great sculptural enterprises of Avila and its cathedral, and makes this Orante an eloquent testimony of the transition between medieval tradition and Renaissance language in Spanish sculpture.
From a collecting point of view, it is worth noting the remarkable scarcity of marble sculptures of generous size from this period in the private market. The stone pieces from Vasco de la Zarza's environment are exceptional outside of museum or cathedral contexts. This circumstance places the work at a very select level, typical of a high-ranking Renaissance sculpture cabinet, and reinforces its historical and patrimonial interest.
