This is a sculpture belonging to the Spanish school of the early sixteenth century, still inscribed within the formal and spiritual assumptions of late Gothic. The piece is made of lead and is currently presented on an iron base of the twentieth century. Its dimensions place it within the sphere of private devotional sculpture or small format, probably destined for a domestic oratory or a conventual space. From the technical and formal point of view, it is a sculpture worked practically in the round, although conceived for frontal contemplation, which explains the lesser degree of elaboration on the back. This frontal character responds to a still medieval conception of the image, in which the devotional function takes precedence over spatial exploration. The figure stands with marked verticality, wrapped in a treatment of the drapery that falls into broad and schematic folds, organized more by linear rhythms than by an underlying anatomical study.
Iconographically, the representation of the saint responds to conventional models of feminine sanctity: upright figure, serene attitude, expressionless or slightly idealized face, ample clothing that hides the body and emphasizes modesty and spirituality. The absence of a clearly identifiable attribute prevents a precise attribution, but does not nullify its symbolic efficacy. In the context of the 15th and early 16th centuries, Spanish religious sculpture had an eminently didactic purpose: the images functioned as visual narratives accessible to a largely illiterate population. The clarity of the message was a priority; therefore, the formal language is conceptual, supported by symbols and conventions widely recognized by the community.At this time, prior to the full development of Renaissance naturalism in peninsular territory, the plastic language remains anchored in Gothic formulas. The face is not intended to individualize, but to typify; the features are simplified, and the expression is subordinated to the idea of spiritual recollection.
