DESCRIPTION
French school. Louis XIV period, XVII century.
Fountain mask.
Cast and patinated lead.
Measurements: 46 x 47 x 10 cm.
This expressive sculptural mask, conceived as a fountain spout, belongs to the French decorative field of the 17th century, in the middle of Louis XIV's time, when gardens and architectures were conceived as theatrical stages at the service of power. The use of lead - a common material in fountains and hydraulic elements due to its resistance to water - places the piece within the functional and ornamental production of palatial gardens and grand residences.
The face, of marked expressiveness, responds to the baroque tradition of masks: exaggerated features, open gaze and perforated mouth destined to the exit of the water. This type of figures, inspired by classical models and fantastic imagery, evoked both theatrical masks and river divinities or grotesque beings linked to the aquatic world. The modeling of the hair and beard, treated with volume and dynamism, reinforces the sensation of movement and vitality.
The dark patina of the lead, enriched by the passage of time, adds depth and character to the surface, underlining its authenticity and its original outdoor use. Today, beyond its hydraulic function, the piece retains all its sculptural strength and is presented as a decorative element of great impact, especially attractive for garden projects or architecture with a historical vocation.
