DESCRIPTION
South German school, 17th century
Crucified Christ.
Boxwood.
Measurements: 55,5 x 18 x 10 cm.
Delicate devotional sculpture carved in boxwood, representing Christ crucified with great attention to detail in the anatomy and the treatment of the folds of the purity cloth. The figure, of stylized canon and marked expressiveness, is placed on an elevated cross that rises from a base with a skull, a symbolic element associated with Golgotha and redemption. The fineness of the carving, especially visible in the modeling of the torso and face, is evidence of a careful execution typical of 17th century Central European workshops.
This type of pieces, characteristic of southern Germany, respond to the tradition of small-format religious sculpture intended for private devotion. The use of boxwood, a hard, fine-grained wood, allowed for a precise and detailed finish, highly valued in this type of work. The composition, with strong verticality and symbolic presence, is inscribed in the baroque aesthetic, where the emotional intensity and the contained dramatism seek to encourage the contemplation and piety of the faithful.
