DESCRIPTION
Spanish school, following Roman models; early 20th century.
"Bust".
Bronze and wooden base.
Measurements: 40 x 23 x 20 cm.
Male bust inspired by classical models, inscribed in the tradition of archaeological reproductions that knew a remarkable boom in Spain in the early twentieth century. This type of piece responds to an academic and pedagogical interest in classical antiquity, in a context in which museums, academies and private collections promoted the copying and reinterpretation of Greco-Roman models as a tool for study, cultural dissemination and aesthetic legitimization.
From the stylistic point of view, the bust shows a clear dependence on imperial Roman prototypes, perceptible in the expressive severity, the schematic but effective treatment of the hair through rhythmic incisions, and the synthetic construction of the face, where frontality and economy of resources contribute to an image of contained authority. It is not, however, a literal copy of a specific ancient original, but a free recreation. The surface shows irregularities, abrasions and areas of chromatic wear that evoke the passage of time, a common resource in this type of production to reinforce its historical verisimilitude.
