DESCRIPTION
European School, XVIII century
"Devotee".
Carved ivory.
It has a slight crack in the left arm.
Measurements: 12 cm (height)
Small sculpture in ivory that represents a bearded masculine figure kneeling, dressed with tunic of wide folds and captured in an attitude of recollection. The piece stands out for the delicacy of the carving and the softness of the modeling, especially visible in the treatment of the face and the fall of the drapery.
An example of the refinement of the decorative arts in 18th century Europe, this type of small-format carving was a prestigious object destined for private collections and "rooms of marvels".
The figure, probably of a religious nature, corresponds to models widespread in Europe. Because of its quality of execution and the attractiveness of the material, the piece is part of the tradition of small sculpture, designed for close appreciation.
