George Grard was an outstanding sculptor. He is recognized mainly by his sculptures of feminine figures, characterized by soft volumes, ample proportions and a sensation of serenity and balance.
From a young age he showed an interest in art and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tournai and later in Brussels. Throughout his career, Grard developed his own style influenced by classicism and sculptors such as Aristide Maillol, although with a more robust and contemporary approach.
His work focuses almost exclusively on the female body, which he represented with rounded and monumental forms, moving away from excessive anatomical detail to emphasize harmony and sensuality. Many of his sculptures convey calm, stability and a connection to nature.
During World War II, Grard was part of the artistic group known as Jeune Peinture Belge, which sought to renew art in Belgium after the conflict. Over time, he achieved international recognition and his works were exhibited in important museums and public spaces.
Among his best known works are monumental sculptures installed in Belgian cities, especially on the coast, such as in Ostend and Saint-Idesbald, where there is also a museum dedicated to his work.
