Sculpture inspired by one of the most iconic models of Florentine mannerism, popularized by Giambologna. The work is originally based on a marble fragment of classical antiquity (found in Rome and restored in the sixteenth century), whose expressive force fascinated the Flemish master, who turned it into a benchmark of technical virtuosity in bronze.

The composition stands out for its great narrative force, capturing the moment of maximum tension of the attack. The design is resolved through a complex interplay of volumes and the characteristic helical movement or serpentinata, which invites the viewer to surround the piece to appreciate all its angles.

This piece stands out for its expressive vigor and careful anatomical articulation, visible in the muscular tension of the horse and the detailed treatment of the mane and fur of the lion. Sculptural groups of this type, which became widespread after the models of Giambologna and Antonio Susini, were in great demand during the Grand Tour and in the 19th century, being indispensable pieces in collections of historicist bronzes for their balance between drama and decorative elegance.
