The representation of soccer players in Art Deco sculpture responds to several cultural and aesthetic changes of the 1920s and 1930s. In the first place, Art Deco coincides with the rise of modern sport as a mass phenomenon. Soccer, in full international expansion, became a symbol of modernity, urban leisure and contemporary life, moving away from traditional classical or mythological themes. In addition, this artistic style felt a special fascination for the body in movement, speed and energy, values very much in line with the practice of sports. Soccer players made it possible to represent dynamic figures, in tension and balance, ideal for the formal language of Art Deco, characterized by stylized lines, simplified volumes and geometric rhythms.
Édouard Fraisse was a sculptor linked to the Art Deco movement, known mainly for his decorative works in bronze and other materials, many of them intended for architecture and applied arts. Trained in the French academic tradition, Fraisse developed a language that evolved towards more stylized and modern forms, typical of the interwar period. His production includes sculptures of female figures, athletes, ornamental reliefs and architectural elements, often characterized by refined lines, simplified volumes and a certain restrained dynamism. He participated in important decorative projects in France, integrating sculpture into public and private buildings, which places him within that generation of artists who worked in the synthesis between art and architecture, so characteristic of Art Deco. Overall, his work reflects the transition between the academicism of the late nineteenth century and the decorative modernity of the twentieth century, with an elegant, structured style clearly oriented to spatial integration.
