LOUIS ALEXANDRE LEFÈVRE (Cherbourg, 1849 - Paris, 1893).
"Marguerite in the church".
Bronze.
Signed.
Measurements: 75 x 64 x 50 cm.
This sculpture refers to the character of the work Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Marguerite, symbol of innocence and tragedy. This bronze version follows the original model of the sculptor preserved in the Musée Thomas Henry, made in marble, which shows the diffusion of the work in different materials. The figure represents Marguerite seated, collected on herself in an introspective posture. Her lowered gaze and the inclination of her head suggest a state of contemplation or melancholy, a feature very present in symbolist aesthetics and in certain aspects of late realism. The treatment of the face, delicate and serene, contrasts with the textural richness of the folds of the dress, which fall naturally and reveal a profound study of the movement and weight of the fabric. The sculptor demonstrates a remarkable mastery of anatomical modeling and composition, achieving a balance between naturalism and emotional expression.
Louis Alexandre Lefèvre-Deslongchamps was a French sculptor trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the tutelage of Auguste Dumont. He began his exhibition career at the Salon de la Société des artistes français in 1873, where he participated regularly until 1890.His work is in the academic tradition of nineteenth-century French sculpture, combining official commissions with compositions of a more intimate nature. Among his most outstanding works are the sculptural decorations of the Cherbourg theater and the statue of Eugène Burnouf for the Paris City Hall. He also produced bronze groups such as À l'abattoir, presented at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, and Bouvier et Bœuf, linked to the environment of the La Villette slaughterhouses.
Throughout his career he received several awards, including medals at various Salons and a silver medal at the Universal Exposition of 1889. Died prematurely in Paris, Lefèvre-Deslongchamps left a production representative of the academic and decorative taste of his time, with works preserved in institutions such as the Musée Thomas Henry.
