BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

GREGORIO PARDO (Burgos, c. 1513-Toledo, in or before 1556).
"Virgin and Child".
Polychrome alabaster.
Measurements: 21 x 16 cm; 37 x 27 cm (frame).
The work represents one of the most constant and significant themes of Christian art: the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. This motif, deeply rooted in the devotional tradition, embodies the divine maternity and the incarnation of Christ. The quality of the work is part of Spanish Renaissance sculpture, characterized by a balance between idealization and naturalism. In this type of representation, special care is taken in the treatment of the volumes, the softness of the faces and the elegance of the folds, which reveal a refined technique. The relationship between mother and son is usually resolved with a serene and contained language, in which emotion is expressed without excess, in accordance with Renaissance ideals.
The figure of Gregorio Pardo is key to understanding this work. Son of the sculptor Felipe Bigarny and disciple of Damián Forment, Pardo was trained in a high-level artistic environment. His career links him to important centers of the Spanish Renaissance, such as the cathedral of Toledo, where he developed works that demonstrate his knowledge of the classical tradition and Hellenistic-inspired decoration.
The distinctive features of his style are reflected in the compositional harmony, technical refinement and Italian influence, visible in the idealization of forms and the balance of proportions. Unlike the later dramatism of the Baroque, here a serene beauty predominates, based on formal clarity and expressive restraint. These characteristics place the work within the full Spanish Renaissance, at a time of transition towards a greater naturalism.
Contextually, the sculpture responds to a period in which religious art played a central role in both liturgy and private devotion. Works such as this could form part of altarpieces, chapels or spaces of recollection, fulfilling both an aesthetic and spiritual function. Gregorio Pardo's production, developed in key cities such as Burgos, Madrid and Toledo, reflects the consolidation of his own sculptural language that integrates Flemish and Italian influences.
