DESCRIPTION
Pair of reliefs, XVIII century.
Carved and gilded wood.
Measurements: 27 x 88 cm; 27 x 75 cm.
Both panels present a winged cherub's head (or angel of round bulk). This resource was extremely common in the XVII and XVIII centuries to symbolize the divine presence. There is a predominant taste for leaf litter and rolled acanthus. The scrolls are fleshy and dynamic, typical of the 18th century, seeking to create a very dramatic play of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) through deep relief.
Carved wood, rigged and water gilded. Traces of blue polychrome can be seen in the backgrounds of the moldings, a technical combination known as estofado (although here it seems more like an application of color on the background to highlight the gold of the carvings).
