After GIAMBOLOGNA (Flanders, 1529 - Florence, 1608); XIX century.
"The abduction of the Sabine women".
Patinated bronze.
Measurements: 104 x 35 x 49 cm.
The sculpture we are contemplating, inspired by The Rape of the Sabine Women by Giambologna, is much more than a simple nineteenth-century reproduction: it is a vibrant re-reading of one of the great manifestos of Mannerist dynamism. Made in patinated bronze during the 19th century, this work takes up the famous model executed in 1589 for the Loggia of the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, today preserved in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, transferring it to a new historical context in which the classical past became an object of admiration, study and, above all, of collection. From the formal point of view, the piece displays a technical mastery that captures with intensity the human drama. The three figures are intertwined in an ascending composition that responds to the characteristic serpentinata line, a typical resource of late Renaissance art that forces the viewer to surround the sculpture to fully understand it.
But what makes this work particularly interesting is its status as a nineteenth-century reproduction. During the 19th century, the replication of famous models such as this one achieved enormous popularity. This was due to several converging factors. First, the rise of bourgeois collecting drove the demand for sculptures that evoked the great masters of the past, allowing a new social class to symbolically access the cultural prestige of the aristocracy. Secondly, the development of more efficient casting techniques facilitated the production of versions in different sizes and finishes, making these works more accessible without sacrificing high artistic quality. The 19th century was also profoundly marked by historicism and a fascination with classical antiquity and the Renaissance. Academies, museums and Grand Tour travelers consolidated an artistic canon in which names such as Giambologna's occupied a central place.
