DESCRIPTION

Cupid; France, third quarter of the nineteenth century.
Patinated bronze and bronze base.
Measurements: 66 x 42 x 37 cm.
Made in patinated bronze and elevated on an elaborate base also cast in bronze, the piece represents the god of love infantilized, following an iconography inherited from both the Renaissance and the eighteenth-century Rococo, although reinterpreted from the historicism and eclectic taste characteristic of the Second Empire and later decades.
The figure, conceived with a soft modeling and rounded flesh tones, emphasizes the gentle vision and restrained dynamism characteristic of the French academic tradition. The Cupid appears seated on a drapery of flowing folds, with his torso turned and one of his arms extended in a gesture that adds compositional vivacity. The small wing visible behind the back unmistakably identifies the mythological character, while the smiling expression and the childlike volume refer to the nineteenth-century fascination with sentimental and decorative representations of childhood.
Particularly relevant is the base, profusely ornamented with scrolls and rocaille-inspired forms, which connects the work with the recovery of the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles promoted by the Parisian manufactures and workshops of the nineteenth century. Beyond its structural function, this support acts as a scenographic and ornamental element, integrating the sculpture into the sphere of bourgeois collecting and the decoration of sumptuous interiors. In this context, pieces like this not only fulfilled an aesthetic function, but also a representative one: they were evidence of the cultural refinement and knowledge of the classical tradition on the part of their owners.
The quality of the casting and the richness of the patina also reflect the extraordinary technical development achieved by the French bronze industry in the 19th century, a period in which Paris established itself as one of the great European centers for the production of artistic bronzes. The work synthesizes, in short, the ability of nineteenth-century decorative art to combine technical virtuosity, historical evocation and visual appeal, turning a traditional mythological motif into an object destined both for aesthetic delight and social affirmation.
