With Les Nénuphars (Water Lilies), Georges Charles Coudray offers an idealized vision of feminine beauty at the dawn of the 20th century. Both sculptures represent a young woman with a serene and introspective gaze, whose features and the almost living texture of her skin are evidence of the artist's technical virtuosity. Her long hair falls in soft undulations over her chest and shoulders, contributing to a sense of fluidity and harmony. Both pieces reproduce the same model, although they vary in material, one being carved in marble and the other modeled in terracotta.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the work is the poetic integration of natural elements in the composition. Flowers sprout symmetrically on both sides of the hair, reinforcing a sense of organic balance. The figure seems to merge with nature: timeless, peaceful and charged with symbolic grace. This fusion reaches its maximum expression in the base, conceived not as a traditional pedestal, but as a stylized stem decorated with water lilies in bas-relief. This blurs the boundary between the human figure and the plant world, in full harmony with the principles of Art Nouveau.
The work was first presented at the Paris Salon of 1899 in a terracotta version, before being executed in marble, which testifies to the recognition that the artist achieved in his time. Although Georges Charles Coudray occupies a discreet place in the history of French sculpture, Les Nénuphars stands as a masterful synthesis of elegance, symbolism and natural beauty. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the tutelage of masters such as Alexandre Falguière, Henri Allouard and Gabriel-Jules Thomas, he made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1883, where he exhibited regularly until 1903.
His production includes busts, statuettes and medals, with a predilection for female subjects inspired by mythology, literature or exoticism. He worked with materials such as bronze, marble and terracotta, fusing the linear elegance of Art Nouveau with the ornamental richness of Orientalism. His figures are characterized by fluid lines, delicate modeling and meticulous attention to decorative detail, achieving a balance between classical tradition and modern sensibility.
