BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

CESARE VIVIANI (Active in the late nineteenth century - early twentieth century).
"Children warming themselves with fire".
Carrara marble.
Signed Cesare Viviani, Scultor, Pietrasanta.
Measurements: 63 cm (height).
The two figures are shown in a posture of natural closeness. Their gestures are contained, almost shy, and the treatment of the faces reveals a remarkable delicacy. The features, soft and gentle, do not so much construct a narrative as an atmosphere: concentration, waiting, the physical sensation of the cold and the progressive relief brought by the shared warmth. The composition is articulated around a circular movement: the bodies curve inward, creating a closed, protective, almost enveloping form that reinforces the idea of shared warmth and silent solidarity between the two children. The treatment of the material is based on a deliberate contrast: the skin appears smooth and luminous, while the clothing and the base have a rougher and more textured texture, accentuating the opposition between human fragility and the harshness of the external environment.
Cesare Viviani, active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was an Italian sculptor whose career remains poorly documented. His name is associated with decorative groups depicting childhood scenes and genre themes, in keeping with the bourgeois taste of the time for gentle and emotive images. His production seems to belong to the activity of a workshop sculptor or an independent artist linked to the Italian naturalistic and sentimental tradition of the late 19th century.
The works attributed to him reflect a sensibility in keeping with late academicism, characterized by attention to soft forms, expressive clarity of gestures and a meticulous finish. In this context, his work participates in an aesthetic that seeks to idealize the everyday, transforming simple gestures into scenes charged with emotional resonance, where intimacy and tenderness acquire a central role.
