DESCRIPTION

ALBERT CONSTANT DESENFANS ( Genappe, 1845 - Braine-l'Alleud, 1938).
"Eloquence".

This sculpture entitled "Eloquence" and made in bronze by Albert Constant Desenfans (Genappe, 1845 - Braine-l'Alleud, 1938), is a refined example of the allegorical tradition in European sculpture of the late nineteenth century. The female figure embodying eloquence stands in a serene and dignified posture, with her right hand slightly raised in a gesture that suggests both speech in action and the capacity for persuasion. The treatment of the body, wrapped in a delicate draping that adheres to the anatomy, reveals Desenfans' interest in formal fidelity and naturalism, without renouncing an idealization that refers to classical models. The expression of the face, concentrated and elevated, reinforces this symbolic dimension: it is not an individual figure, but the personification of an intellectual and emotional virtue deeply rooted in the Western rhetorical tradition.
The concept of eloquence that the work materializes is echoed in Cicero's reflection, who pointed out that it is not enough to convince or please, but that the true orator must also move, integrating reason, emotion and expressive beauty. This triad -convince, please, move- seems to be translated here in sculptural terms: the clarity of the gesture, the harmony of the proportions and the vitality of the modeling converge to transmit a silent eloquence, typical of the plastic language.
Trained at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels under the tutelage of masters such as Louis Jehotte, Eugène Simonis and Égide Mélot, Desenfans developed a solid career marked by his participation, from 1866, in numerous Belgian and international salons. His production covered religious, mythological and allegorical themes, as well as portraits, often inspired by drawings by Xavier Mellery. He also received important public commissions for emblematic buildings such as the Hôtel de Ville in Brussels, the Maison du Roi, the Palais de Justice in Brussels and the Maison de la Province in Liège, and collaborated with Thomas Vinçotte and Jef Lambeaux in the decoration of the Arcades of the Parc du Cinquantenaire.
Although he excelled in large decorative programs, Desenfans also cultivated the small format, as shown in "Eloquence". In these more intimate works, executed in a variety of materials - stone, marble, plaster or ivory - his technical precision and commitment to credible representation are particularly evident, qualities that earned him recognition during his lifetime and continue to be appreciated in the contemporary art market.
