EDMOND LEFEVER (Ypres, Belgium, 1830 - Brussels, 1911).
"Risette".
Carrara marble.
Signed and titled.

This refined marble bust, titled Risette, embodies the elegant grace and poetic sensibility characteristic of the Art Nouveau period. The composition is conceived with remarkable fluidity, as the base and figure blend seamlessly into each other, creating a harmonious continuity of forms that reflects the organic principles of the style. The young woman is depicted in profile, her head gently turned, capturing a moment of quiet introspection. Her delicately modeled features are illuminated by a subtle and serene expression, accentuated by the delicate "sweet smile" that gives the work its title. This expression, at once natural and without artifice, conveys a sense of innocence and emotional immediacy, free of affectation or theatricality.
Particular attention has been paid to the treatment of the hair, elegantly gathered in a low bun, with finely sculpted locks that demonstrate the sculptor's technical precision. The draping, which falls softly over the shoulders, is executed with a refined sensitivity to texture and movement, subtly contrasting with the softness of the skin. The sculptor achieves a delicate balance between realism and idealization, resulting in a work that is at once intimate and timeless.
Edmond Lefever was a sculptor of great talent who practiced almost all genres, using a variety of available materials. His career began somewhat late, after receiving the necessary training and various distinctions in Ypres and Brussels. Together with his friend Polydoor Comein (1848-1907), also a native of Ypres and destined for success, Lefever undertook a study trip to Italy. After his marriage, he settled in Schaerbeek in Brussels. From 1874, Edmond Lefever exhibited with great regularity in almost all the national Salons; sculptures such as First Duel (1878), Cinderella (1881) and Saint Cecilia (1893) earned him recognition.
His works brought him numerous distinctions in London (1878), Adelaide and Caracas (1888). In 1896 he was named knight of the Order of Bolivar and of the Order of Leopold of Belgium. Lefever made numerous busts in bronze and marble. With representations of elegant women such as Risette, presented here, the sculptor clearly responded to the international spirit of the fin de siècle.
