BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of pages; Venice, XIX century.
Ebonized wood and bronze lantern.
It does not preserve two of the glass of the lantern.
Measurements: 220 x 55 x 50 cm.
This unique pair of Venetian pages made in the 19th century in ebonized wood with bronze lanterns is a magnificent example of the historicist and theatrical taste that characterized the European decorative arts during the nineteenth century. Inspired by the courtly and ceremonial tradition of Baroque Venice, the figures represent young servants dressed in rich costumes of fantasy evocative of Seicento, conceived not only as sculptural elements, but also as light supports intended to ennoble interior spaces of great decorative apparatus.
The work stands out for the refined carving of the figures, whose elegant and slightly dynamic attitude brings naturalism and scenic sophistication to the whole. The idealized faces, the hair treated in detail and the meticulous representation of the folds and ornaments of the clothing reveal a clear ornamental vocation, close to the scenographic spirit of the Venetian historicist furniture. The ebonized wood intensifies the dramatic effect of the figures and establishes an attractive contrast with the gilded bronze lanterns, whose openwork shapes and sinuous profiles refer to rococo and baroque models reinterpreted from the decorative sensibility of the 19th century.
This type of sculpture-lamp had an eminently representative function. Conceived for lobbies, halls or galleries of aristocratic and bourgeois residences, they acted as symbols of luxury and cultural sophistication, integrating sculpture, furniture and lighting in a single piece. The choice of pages as an iconographic motif also responded to the Romantic taste for the idealized recreation of the past, especially for historical Venice, understood as a scene of splendor, exoticism and theatricality.
