Sculpture in patinated bronze made by Louis Dupont, conceived as an Olympic trophy and representing a naked athlete in attitude of celebration. The work combines the classical athletic ideal with a modern sensibility typical of interwar European sculpture. The black patina reinforces the sobriety of the whole and accentuates the modeling of the body, of refined lines and great formal elegance. The symbolic character of the piece concentrates on the exaltation of effort, victory and the body as a heroic emblem.
Louis Dupont was a Belgian sculptor, medalist and draughtsman. He trained at the Academy of Liège, where he was a disciple for ten years of the sculptor and medalist Georges Petit. His production included public sculpture, monuments, reliefs and medals; his works include interventions for Liège, such as the Memorial of the Resistance and architectural reliefs for public buildings.
