DESCRIPTION
Pair of Italian candlesticks. Late nineteenth century - early twentieth century.
"Soldiers".
Hand polychromed calamine.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use. Missing edges of the swords.
Measurements: 37 cm high; 13 cm. diameter of the base.
Pair of decorative candlesticks made in hand-painted calamine, with male figures dressed as soldiers of historicist inspiration. Both figures appear standing on ornamented circular bases, holding tall stems topped by candleholders, conceived as an integral part of the sculptural composition.
The chromatic richness of the polychromy stands out, with armor, helmets, doublets and tights worked with descriptive and theatrical intent. Because of their paired character, their ornamental function and their historicist iconography, they are a representative example of European decorative production destined for bourgeois interiors.
