These sculptures of torch angels, made in carved and polychrome wood belong to one of the most suggestive manifestations of religious baroque art: the imagery. The typology of the "torchero angel" acquired special relevance during the Catholic Baroque, in a context deeply marked by the spirituality of the Counter-Reformation. After the Council of Trent (1545-1563), sacred art was transformed into a pedagogical and devotional instrument capable of moving the faithful through close, theatrical and emotional images. In this scenario, sculptures such as these played a fundamental role in churches, altarpieces and processions: they held torches, candelabras or luminaries that reinforced the ceremonial dimension of worship and turned light into a metaphor of the divine presence.
Both sculptures show characteristic traits of the Mediterranean baroque language. The figures show a dynamic and elegant attitude: a slight torsion of the body, the advance of the feet and the open disposition of the arms generate a sensation of contained, almost choreographic movement. This dynamism, so characteristic of the 17th century, sought to break with Renaissance rigidity and bring sacred images closer to the sensitive and emotional world of the believer. The serene gesture of the faces, together with the youthful delicacy of the features, transmits a kind and accessible spirituality, far from any hieratic severity.
The ambiguity between an Italian or Spanish attribution is particularly interesting from an art-historical point of view. Both traditions shared intense aesthetic exchanges during the Baroque, especially through religious and commercial circuits linked to the Catholic world. While the Italian school tended to favor a more fluid and elegant modeling, the Spanish school developed an imagery with an intense devotional charge and notable polychrome naturalism. In these pieces both sensibilities seem to coexist: decorative grace and chromatic refinement dialogue with a direct physical presence close to the spectator.
Within the genre of processional and devotional sculpture, the torch-bearing angels occupy a singular place. Although secondary to the central figures of Christs, Virgins or saints, they were essential for the scenographic construction of the Baroque sacred space.
