BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

GEORGES CHAUVEL (Elbeuf, France, 1886 - Le Val-Saint-Germain, France, 1962)
Bust of a young woman, ca. 1920-1930.
Patinated bronze.
Signed.
Measurements: 40 x 30 x 20 cm.

Female bust in patinated bronze, resolved with a sober and refined language. The figure appears represented with the head slightly inclined and the low glance, in a serene and introspective attitude. The modeling, with smooth surfaces and contained volumes, reveals the author's interest in an idealized beauty, close to modern classicism and the sculptural sensibility of the Art Deco period. The work has a warm patina, with wear and surface marks typical of the passage of time.

Georges Chauvel was a French sculptor trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, where he studied with Alphonse Guilloux. After World War I, his career gained special momentum, participating from 1919 in the Salon des Indépendants and developing a production linked to modern classicism and Art Deco language. He made public monuments, commemorative works and figure sculptures, characterized by formal serenity, purification of volumes and compositional balance. His work is represented in institutions such as the Château-Musée de Dourdan, the Musée Despiau-Wlérick in Mont-de-Marsan and the Musée Antoine-Lécuyer in Saint-Quentin.
