DESCRIPTION
"Bishop. Spain, XIV or XV century.
Statuette in carved wood.
It presents accidents, faults and superficial losses typical of its age.
Measurements: 63 x 15 x 9 cm.
Statuette in carved wood representing a holy bishop. The work responds to a devotional typology linked to the late medieval sphere, in which the figures of saintly prelates occupied a prominent place in altarpieces, secondary altars and sculptural ensembles for worship.
The character is identified by his episcopal status, probably through attributes such as the mitre, liturgical vestments or the solemn attitude typical of these representations. The verticality of the figure and the frontal conception suggest that it may have been part of a larger structure, perhaps integrated into an altarpiece or a devotional program dedicated to patron saints.
The carving preserves the synthetic and spiritual character of medieval sculpture, in which the symbolic identification of the character prevails over anatomical naturalism. The treatment of the volumes, the sobriety and the iconic strength of the image refer to a Gothic language, centered on the religious function of the sculpture as an object of veneration and visual teaching.
