European School, XVI century.
"Nativity.
Relief in carved wood with traces of polychrome and gilding.
It presents good general state of preservation, with slight wear, cracks and loss of polychrome typical of its age.
Measurements: 60 x 65 x 4 cm.
Scene in high relief representing the Birth of Christ. The composition is organized around the Child Jesus, located in the center on the manger, towards which the looks and gestures of the main characters converge.
The Virgin appears kneeling on the left, in an attitude of adoration, while St. Joseph is behind her, slightly elevated, reinforcing the depth of the scene. To the right are other devotional figures, among them a kneeling shepherd, together with an ox and a mule, traditional elements of the iconography of the Bethlehem portal. In the upper right zone, an angel among clouds completes the celestial character of the representation.
The narrative richness of the scene and the careful treatment of the draperies, resolved by means of abundant folds and surfaces of great decorative effect, stand out. The remains of polychromy and gilding preserved, especially visible in the mantles, nimbuses and backgrounds, allow us to appreciate the original sumptuousness of the relief, probably conceived to be integrated into an altarpiece or devotional structure.
The formal language, of marked expressiveness and ornamental taste, is inscribed within the European sculptural tradition of the 16th century, in which the polychrome carving played a fundamental role as a vehicle of devotion and visual teaching. The combination of relief, color and gilding intensified the presence of the image and facilitated its reading within the liturgical space. The piece is an attractive example of Renaissance devotional relief.
