DESCRIPTION
Set of five crucified Christs, first half of the 20th century.
Carved and polychrome wood; one of them on a wooden cross with polychrome stucco.
They show slight scuffs, minor chips, cracks, isolated losses of polychrome, and dirt.
Measurements: 35 x 33 cm. (Largest Christ figure).
Five depictions of the dying Christ, carved from wood and polychromed. The pieces display different stylistic approaches within the devotional imagery of the first half of the 20th century: ranging from the hieratic frontal pose of the Christ on the cross—more schematic and neo-Romanesque in character—to examples with more naturalistic anatomy, featuring a twisted body, a folded cloth of purity, and polychrome accents on the wounds.
The variety of models allows one to appreciate different degrees of craftsmanship: some Christs feature a more simplified carving style, while others display a more expressive treatment of the face, hair, and the tension in the arms. The collection retains a distinct patina of wear, with signs of wear and loss consistent with its devotional function and the age of the pieces.
