DESCRIPTION
Spanish School, late 19th century.
Set of two crucified Christs.
Carved boxwood, polychromed.
They show slight scuffs, minor chips, loss of polychrome, and soiling. The smaller Christ figure is missing a finger.
Measurements: 30 x 25 cm and 27 x 22 cm.
Set consisting of two figures of the dying Christ, carved from boxwood and polychromed. Both pieces retain the expressiveness characteristic of nineteenth-century devotional imagery, with stylized anatomies, arms raised in tension, and tilted faces that accentuate the drama of the depiction.
The treatment of the cloths of purity, especially on the larger figure, incorporates gilded polychromy that highlights the ornamental nature of the carving. In the second Christ figure, with its more restrained modeling, the verticality of the body and the restrained expression of the face stand out.
