DESCRIPTION
19th-century Spanish school.
"Christ on the Cross."
Carved boxwood.
Carved, non-functional wood-eating insects.
Measurements: 47 x 29 x 6 cm.
A wood-carved Crucified Christ, characterized by marked verticality and stylized proportions, depicted with his head bowed over his chest, hair rendered in parallel strands, and a short beard, displaying a sober and schematic anatomy with gently defined ribs and musculature. The shroud features angular, decorative folds tied in knots on both sides—features reminiscent of late Gothic or early Renaissance models, likely from the 15th–16th centuries—with a serene and restrained expression that emphasizes spirituality rather than the drama of suffering.
