A largely self-taught artist, Planell was a member of the Círculo Maillol in Barcelona. He first gained recognition in 1953 at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona. Just two years later, he won a bronze medal at the Alexandria Biennial and received an award at the International Sacred Art Competition. Since then, he has participated in numerous exhibitions in various countries, often as part of the Sílex group. In Barcelona, he took part in the October Salons and was a founding member of the May Salons. In 1959, he was part of the so-called Barcelona School, and in 1960 he participated in the Venice Biennale and in a group exhibition held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Carlos Planell is represented in the MACBA collection.
