In this bronze sculpture, Jaume Duran combines classicism and modernity. The figure is depicted in full face, poised, with an almost architectural verticality, while the folds of the dress and the ears of wheat introduce a linear rhythm that enlivens the surface of the bronze. The dark patina reinforces the figure’s gravity and is marked by contrasts with the green marble pedestal, which lends solidity and an elegant decorative presence.
Created in 1929, the sculpture is part of a particularly significant context for Catalan artistic culture: the Barcelona International Exposition and the consolidation of a monumental, civic, and Mediterranean sculptural ideal. As an allegory of agriculture, the work draws on the tradition of female figures bearing fruit, ears of grain, or symbolic attributes associated with prosperity, the earth, and classical order.
Jaume Duran i Castellanos was a sculptor and professor, trained at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts and under the guidance of his uncle, the religious artist Miquel Castellanos; he was a disciple of Esteve Monegal and furthered his studies in Florence, Brussels, and Paris. His body of work ranged from the classicism of his monumental pieces to a restrained realism in his portraits and public sculptures. Among his best-known works are the allegorical group of Montseny for Barcelona’s Plaça de Catalunya, as well as various sculptures for the Barcelona Bar Association building. His work forms part of Catalonia’s public sculptural heritage and is closely linked to the Noucentista style of the first half of the 20th century.
