The Olot school of religious sculpture has its roots in the fact that, around 1850, there was already a significant textile industry in the city of Girona (cotton growers, weavers, etc.) stemming from the Indian trade. Consequently, a well-developed artisanal base already existed. The promoters of Christian art in Olot took advantage of this situation to create a new and flourishing sculpture industry during this period.
