Created by the renowned sculptor Alfredo Lanz—famous for his iconic monument “Homenaje a la Natación” (Homage to Swimming) located in Barcelona’s Port Vell—“Totality I” is a captivating work that challenges our perception of contemporary art. With this piece, the artist invites us to engage in a profound conceptual reflection, reminding us that in the art world not everything is invented, but that true beauty often arises from observation, reinterpretation, and connection with the world around us.
Coming directly from the sculptor’s studio, this work exudes an authentic and personal character. Materially speaking, the piece is masterfully crafted in resin and stands out for its evocative finish, adorned with a rust-effect patina. This meticulously crafted patina lends it a rich texture and a sense of timelessness, endowing the sculpture with a striking visual presence and an earthy warmth that interacts perfectly with the light in the space.
A painter, sculptor, jeweler, and designer from Madrid who has been based in Barcelona since 1970, Alfredo Lanz trained at the Casa de la Moneda y Timbre in Madrid and furthered his studies in New York. Throughout his career, he has exhibited his work in Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and has received numerous awards. He has also taught numerous courses in design, jewelry, and sculpture at institutions such as the Barcelona Industrial School, the F.I.E.M. BioArt Laboratory, and the D.M.I. School of Jewelry Design, as well as at various private art schools. Named Master Artisan Sculptor by the Generalitat de Catalunya, Lanz is vice president of the Lanz-Faura Foundation for Research on Mediterranean Sculpture and president of the ArtNautas Cultural Association. His work is currently represented in the Barcelona Museum of Costume, the Termalia-Manolo Hugé Museum in Caldes de Montbui, the F.C. Barcelona Art Museum, the Costa Brava Museum of Modern Art in Palamós, the Andrea Serrano Foundation in the Canary Islands, the F.I.E.M. Foundation in Barcelona, and the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts in Florida, as well as in collections throughout Europe, the Americas, and China.
