DESCRIPTION
OTTO LESSING (Düsseldorf, 1846 – Berlin, 1912).
“Archer.”
Gilded bronze sculpture.
Onyx base.
Measurements: 18 x 10 x 7 cm (sculpture); 30 x 10.5 x 8 cm (total).
A small-scale sculpture cast in gilded bronze, depicting an archer in a dynamic pose. The figure leans forward, with one leg extended over a rocky outcrop and the body twisted, in the moment just before or after drawing the bow. The anatomical rendering, the defined musculature, and the tension of the pose reflect the historicist and neoclassical tastes of the late 19th century, in which the male body becomes a vehicle for energy, balance, and formal virtuosity.
The gilded surface enhances the piece’s decorative quality and highlights the volumes of the torso, legs, and tilted face. The two-part onyx base combines a white block with a veined plinth, providing textural contrast and elevating the sculpture as a cabinet piece.
Otto Lessing was a prominent German historicist sculptor who played a pivotal role in shaping the decorative landscape of Berlin in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His sculptural and ornamental work can be found in buildings such as the Reichstag, the Prussian House of Lords, the Neuer Marstall, the Berliner Dom, the State Library, and the Berlin Konzerthaus, as well as the Reichsgericht in Leipzig and St. Michael’s Church in Hamburg. Notable among his public monuments are the Lessing Monument in the Tiergarten, the Hercules Fountain at Lützowplatz, and various sculptures for the Siegesallee.
