Kieff’s sculptural oeuvre finds one of its most significant examples in this 1975 work, which synthesizes the constants that define his artistic language. The refinement of form, the balance between matter, void, and movement, as well as a distinctly organic conception of sculpture, are manifested here with particular clarity. The composition, with its pronounced vertical development, unfolds a dynamic interplay of curves and tensions that endows the piece with a remarkable sense of lightness and ascent. The artist’s technical mastery of bronze is particularly evident in this piece. Far from using the material to emphasize its monumentality, the artist harnesses its qualities to create profiles of extraordinary delicacy, highly complex twists, and a carefully patinated surface that intensifies the effect of light on the forms. Designed to be viewed from multiple angles, the sculpture reveals new relationships between its volumes and spaces with every turn, confirming the work’s fully three-dimensional conception.
Created at the height of his creative maturity, this work reflects the artistic vocabulary that Kieff consolidated during the 1970s, characterized by a gradual shift away from figuration toward an abstract language of great expressive power. In this context, the sculpture is part of a period of renewal in the sculptural landscape, when numerous artists were exploring the possibilities of abstraction through a dialogue between material, space, and nature. Without abandoning the sensibility he shared with some of the leading innovators in contemporary sculpture, Kieff developed a voice of his own.
Kieff (Antonio Grediaga) began his artistic training in his father’s cabinetmaking workshop, where he learned the craft by restoring religious furniture. His international career began in 1968 with an exhibition at the Moos Gallery in Montreal, where all of his works were acquired. From then on, he exhibited regularly in galleries and art fairs in Canada, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and Israel. His work is represented in institutional collections such as the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, the Emilio Bacardí Moreau Museum in Santiago de Cuba, and the Museum of the City in Madrid.
