DESCRIPTION
ERNEST HEYLENS (Belgium, 1908–1976).
“Archer,” 1952.
Patinated bronze on a base of Belgian black marble.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 57 x 29 x 11.5 cm; 7.5 x 14.5 x 12.5 cm (base).
The sculpture depicts an archer in the moment of drawing his bow. The man is portrayed completely nude, and the artist has focused all his attention on a meticulous depiction of the anatomy under great strain. All the muscles are taut, supporting the right arm and highlighting the musculature of the chest and abdomen. Despite this, the archer’s expression is serene, though focused, and his regular features and short hair are reminiscent of Greco-Roman sculpture.
