DESCRIPTION
JOSEP BUSQUETS ÓDENA (Fontscaldes, Tarragona, 1914 – Barcelona, 1998).
"Female Torso,"
Stone sculpture.
Signed.
Measurements: 86 x 25 x 25 cm.
In this sculpture, Josep Busquets shows himself to be closely aligned with the legacy of Aristide Maillol, as evidenced by the serene simplicity of the pose, the harmony of the forms, and the essential beauty of the female body. The limbs are soft and rounded, and the anatomy as a whole conveys a sense of calm and solidity, through which the artist seems to reinvent classicism.
Josep Busquets trained at the School of Painting and Sculpture in Tarragona under the guidance of Joan Rebull. He held his first solo exhibition in 1943 and began his career working primarily on commission, creating religious images for churches and public monuments, such as the one dedicated to the “Castellers” (Valls, 1969). He focused primarily on the female figure, particularly in small formats. Most of this sculptor’s work is currently housed in the collection of the Josep Busquets Workshop in Valls.
