The genre sculpture of the 19th and early 20th centuries emerged as a way to interpret a growing sense of national consciousness, now present among the middle class as it advanced toward social hegemony. To a certain extent, the artists’ aim was to deepen their understanding of their country through a language—that of sculpture—that everyone could understand, thereby helping ordinary people grasp the nature and meaning of their national identity, especially as it had manifested in the recent past and remained vivid in the memories of the older generation.
