*Le cheval bleu* brings to ceramics one of the recurring motifs in Salvador Dalí’s imagination: the horse, associated in his work with energy, desire, and transformation. The figure is rendered as a blue silhouette with undulating lines, framed by an organic outline dotted with black shapes that reinforce its fantastical character. The horse occupies the center, while the spots distributed around the edge create a sweeping movement and accentuate the piece’s ornamental quality. The hallmarks of the turquoise blue, black, red, and ivory background reflect the graphic and chromatic language developed by Dalí in his forays into the decorative arts.
Salvador Dalí was one of the central figures of Surrealism and one of the 20th century’s most internationally renowned Spanish artists. His body of work spanned painting, sculpture, printmaking, film, design, and ceramics, freely transferring his iconographic repertoire across different media. His work is held in institutions such as the Dalí Theater-Museum in Figueres, the Reina Sofía Museum, MoMA in New York, and the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg.
