DESCRIPTION
Processional cross. Byzantine art, 9th century.
Cast and chiseled bronze, with relief and incised decoration.
Provenance: Peter Brandes Collection (Denmark).
Measurements: 20 x 13 cm.
The piece is part of the tradition of Byzantine liturgical metalwork, in which the cross played a central role in ceremonies, processions, and other contexts of worship. Its profile, with widened arms and trefoil-shaped finials, follows a typology designed to emphasize the frontal orientation and visibility of the Christian symbol.
The surface combines small hemispherical projections, teardrop-shaped motifs, and a central figurative medallion, as well as remnants of incised characters distributed along the arms. These elements lend visual richness to a composition with a rigorously symmetrical structure, in which geometry, relief, and symbolic content are integrated into a single ornamental scheme.
Its provenance from the Peter Brandes collection adds significant interest within the field of sacred art collecting. Comparable Byzantine processional and liturgical crosses are held in leading institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the British Museum in London.
