Apollo of the Tiber, a modern replica of an ancient statue, Italy, 21st century.

Measurements: 90 x 68 x 40 cm.
The so-called “Apollo of the Tiber” is an outstanding example of how the models of classical Greek sculpture have survived through Roman copies. The original work on which this cast is based was found in fragments in the Tiber River in 1891 and is currently housed in the Museo Nazionale Romano, Terme di Diocleziano, in Rome. Dated to the Roman period, in the 1st century A.D., it reproduces a Greek prototype from around 450 B.C., a pivotal moment in the so-called severe classical style and the progressive pursuit of balance, naturalism, and the idealization of the human body. The tilted head, the serenity of the features, and the carefully arranged hair are hallmarks of the powerful anatomy of the torso, embodying the ideal of masculine beauty associated with Apollo. This modern Italian plaster replica, crafted with great precision and mounted on a simple iron base, also revives the tradition of the “gipsoteca” and academic casts, which have been essential since the 18th century for the study, teaching, and dissemination of the great works of Antiquity.
