DESCRIPTION

PETER GRANSER (Hanover, Germany, 1971)
“Recruiting Station,” Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, 2002.
Color photograph. C-print, edition 20/30.

Hatje Cantz Collector’s Editions label on the reverse.
Measurements: 41 x 31 cm.

This is an image of great visual precision created through the juxtaposition of urban signs: the U.S. Army recruiting station, the large commercial signs for Nathan’s Famous, the fast-food advertising graphics, and the small female figure crossing the sidewalk. Everything seems accidental, but the composition reveals a highly calculated gaze toward the symbolic surface of the city.

The photograph belongs to Granser’s universe of critical observation, attentive to the ways in which American visual culture manifests itself in facades, advertisements, signs, and popular architecture. Here, the hallmarks of the military recruitment message and Coney Island’s backdrop of leisure and consumerism yield a particularly incisive reading: patriotism, advertising, and everyday life are integrated into a single image, almost like a found collage.

The soft color, the frontal framing, and the apparent stillness of the scene reinforce the work’s documentary character, but also its latent irony. Granser does not emphasize the social commentary; he allows it to emerge from the coexistence of these elements.

Peter Granser is a photographer born in Hanover in 1971; he is an Austrian national and is self-taught. His work gained international recognition through series such as “Sun City,” “Coney Island,” and “Signs,” which focus on observations of American society and its visual codes. He was invited to the World Press Photo Masterclass in 2001 and has received, among other honors, the Arles Discovery Award, the Deutscher Sozialpreis, and the Oskar Barnack Award. His work has been published by publishers such as Hatje Cantz and is part of a contemporary documentary tradition characterized by formal precision, irony, and a critical reading of the social landscape.
