DESCRIPTION
CHARLES FRÉGER (Bourges, France, 1975)
“Sumo,” from the “Rikishi” series, 2002–2003.
Color photograph.
Print taken from a published book in the series.
Measurements: 59 x 45 cm; 82 x 67 cm (with frame).
In “Sumo,” Charles Fréger approaches the figure of the young rikishi with a serene, almost ceremonial directness. The subject appears isolated, standing, his body transformed into a symbol of discipline, belonging, and training. There is no dramatization of the match nor any exotic staging: the power of the image stems from the subject’s direct presence and the precision with which the photographer observes the codes of a community.
The photograph is part of the “Rikishi” series, shot in Japan between 2002 and 2003, in which Fréger portrayed young sumo wrestlers and apprentices in their training stables. The series is part of one of the artist’s major lines of work: the portrayal of human groups defined by uniforms, rituals, hierarchies, and signs of collective identity.
The work’s appeal lies in this balance between documentation and formal composition. Fréger seeks not only to document a tradition but also to show how the body, attire, and posture shape a social identity.
Charles Fréger is a French photographer born in Bourges in 1975. His work focuses on portrait series of communities around the world, highlighting uniforms, ceremonial attire, and codes of belonging. Notable among his series are “Rikishi,” “Wilder Mann,” “Yokainoshima,” and “Bretonnes”; his work has been exhibited internationally and is characterized by a documentary approach with a strong anthropological dimension.
